Oh wow...thats a tough one and I feel for you...I don't have children yet and just hope I can be as honest and open with my children. I see everyone, like you, try and do the best or right thing for their children but sometimes it seems it can be heartbreaking...like everyone, children can get caught up in the 'romance' of things...I certainly always have, even though I know things aren't real.
Good luck and hope Addies heart mends soon...

That's so tough. We don't do Santa either for the same reason - we don't ever want to lie to our boys. I have experienced something similar. Every year my husband and I wrap and put out the presents on Christmas Eve so that the boys can experience the magic of waking up and discovering so much more that they had expected. Last year my then 5 yr old came out in the livingroom and exclaimed, "Santa IS real!" We had a good laugh and thought it was so cute that we didn't have the heart to remind him that we've always told him that Santa is make-believe. But I suppose we had it easier in the fact that we didn't have to put Santa away like you had to with Matilda. In time he forgot last year's impression and we didn't have a repeat this year. I think your little one doesn't want the magic to end. But if it doesn't, will next year be as magical? Gosh, it's hard being a momma.

Hi Annie,
I'm not sure how you are going with Matilda at the moment, but we had our first elf on the shelf this year. We, like you, dont have Santa, easter bunny, etc, for the exact same reasons.

When our elf was heading off, I had to think hard about where he was going, as "back to the north pole to live with Santa" wasn't really a realistic option. In the end, boxing day morning, a quantas plane turned up suspended above our kitchen table, and a note saying the Jasper had gone on a round the world trip. My middle, Travis, was beside himself, until I said "oh Traz, all good elves need a rest, he's probably gone to YOUR favorite place in the world to holiday FIRST!" his answer was Disneyland, and I felt confident, that she we run into trouble with "where is Jasper?" I can always make up a little postcard from him. Not sure that helps, but it's what we did ;) good luck!
